for an Independent Mayor
"It is pretty simple really. Everyone should have an equal and fair chance to live their life as they
want whilst caring for others and leaving a planet fit for the future. Life should be fair.
Politics has failed ordinary people. Private greed is prioritised over public need. The rich get richer and than tell us that our lack of decent jobs, housing and medical care is all the fault of a few unfortunate strangers illegally dumped on our shores. We are not fools.
Parties just canvass your vote for the next election with half truths and short term solutions for tomorrow’s headline. They have no long term vision for the next decades, let alone the next generation.
We must urgently invest long term in the East for
-
Health - IT, prevention and community hubs for a modern NHS,
-
Housing - a safe, warm and affordable home for everyone. Intergenerational co-living spaces so that young and old can move out of the large family home
-
Schools and skills training for well paid fulfilling jobs
-
Integrate rail with on demand taxi buses so people don't have to rely on a car
-
A proper offshore grid to deliver green energy to where it is needed
-
Environmental resilience to our erratic climate and threat of sea level rise
-
Carbon reduction and capture to contain climate extremes
-
Community policing and cyber security against scammer
-
It is what any sensible business would do to make our corner of England a greener and more pleasant land"

A strong voice for Norfolk & Suffolk
Capturing the safe Tory seat of Southwold in 2018, David led a Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent (GLI) group to take over East Suffolk Council in 2023.
His cross party working irked the Liberal Democrat party HQ who expelled him. He now sits as an Independent, and has an extensive portfolio:-
Cabinet member and Suffolk board chair for Housing.
Chair of the Waveney Health and Wellbeing, member of the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Partnership and governor of James Paget Hospital
Chair Southwold Harbour and Suffolk Coastal Forum.
Board member of Freeport East.
David has successfully fought the spread of second homes closing the rates loophole and introducing double council tax and residency clauses for new build.
He continues his campaign for more social housing by targeting developers who drop affordable homes commitments for land value profiteering.
He was the first grower to supply Waitrose with organic vegetables 40 years ago, lectured at Otley and Lowestoft colleges, did an MSC in Soil and Water Conservation at UEA. He went to sea for 20 years as a sail training skipper taking local kids to sea as far as Russia and Spain.
A Challenge ...
Many people are suspicious that the new mayor’s office will be just another bureaucratic waste of time and money, so I challenge the other mayorial candidates to get their parties’ permission to back these three promises.
-
The mayor’s salary will be less than double the average salary in Norfolk and Suffolk. Value for money must start at the top.
-
Top officers will have their pay capped at three times this average salary. I have nothing but admiration for the dedication of public servants but can’t see the need for six figure salaries currently.
-
A Scrutiny committee representative of regional non-executive councillors will ensure that the mayor’s office provides more benefit than it costs.
Who puts public need before private greed?
